I’m Lex, an IISA skate instructor. Most of my lessons are private and tailored to each child. Many families choose to skate together, making the lesson a fun experience for both parent and child.
Most lessons are conducted in English, making them ideal for Amsterdam’s international community. Lessons are also available in Dutch, French and German.

I personally teach children from the age of 8. My Skate•A•Round teaching partner also teaches younger children from the age of 5.

One family changed my mind
One family changed my view completely. Suzanne booked a lesson together with her five-year-old daughter Cleo. I wasn’t sure whether children that young would benefit from a private lesson.
A few weeks later she told me Cleo had become enthusiastic about skating, kept practising and was still talking about the lesson. Experiences like this convinced us that younger children can absolutely learn to skate in the right setting.
The Skate•A•Round teaching style
- Parents are welcome to join the lesson. Many do, and it often becomes a memorable family activity.
- I use playful exercises with cones, balls and simple games.
- I don’t mind becoming a little child myself during the lesson. It often helps children relax and learn faster.
- I carefully choose quiet locations with smooth tarmac, such as Noorderpark, Sloterplas, Diemerpark, Park Frankendael and, at quieter moments, Vondelpark.
- Lessons are available in English, Dutch, French and German.

The inline skates are actually customized. Children grow, I get that, but just as it is unpleasant to roller-blade with pinched feet, it is just as unpleasant for a child to go out with rollers that are too large.
Those adjustable inline skates seem handy at first glance, but you can only adjust them in length, not width. The second issue of those adjustable shoes is that the sole of the foot is already adjusted to the print of your foot. If you can, you can adjust the shoe size, but not the imprint, unless you put new soles in it.
2. The rolling. You often see that cheap inline skates do not roll well. The frame material is made of soft plastic and occasionally pinches the wheels, which then do not roll well. The child then has to kick himself completely to move forward. But hey, money is an issue as well. ;)
